Edward I was one of England’s great warrior kings. He embodied the medieval ideal of kingship as a soldier, administrator and a man of faith. He accomplished many military feats during his reign including the conquest of Wales and Scotland (earning him the title “Hammer of the Scots”) and participated in the Crusades. His shield features the 3 Lions of England, first used by King Richard the Lionheart and in use until the reign of Edward III when it was quartered with the fleurs de lys of France. This style of shield first appeared in the medieval period. It evolved from the larger kite shield – which gradually became smaller as head and leg protection became better. It is commonly referred to as a “Heater” shield because of its resemblance to the shape of an old flat iron.
